The assessment of behaviour problems, both externalising and internalising, is introduced as it applies to children and young people in educational and home settings. Links between the theories, descriptions and classification of problem behaviour, and DEC practice in NSW will be highlighted. Appropriate strategies for the assessment of behaviour problems, programming for classroom behaviour management, programming support strategies for and externalising mental health problems, and the evaluation of intervention programs, are discussed as they apply to the educational and other environments in which School Counsellors work. Alternative settings for individuals with behaviour and mental health difficulties are critically evaluated and studied.
