Sociocultural and linguistic characteristics have an impact upon children's development in home and early childhood settings. This unit explores the influences of cultural and community contexts, especially Indigenous Australian cultures on early childhood development and learning within early childhood settings. Central to creating inclusive, enriching early childhood learning environments is educators' understanding of the significance of the personal and social attributes that children bring to the setting. Strategies for establishing positive engagement with children and families are essential to creating inclusive learning environments and curricula. This unit explores current theories and practices surrounding the diversity of Australian cultural contexts and their influences on children's development, the importance of promoting and valuing home cultures in planning enriching early childhood environments and students' own beliefs and values in the consideration of the issues above, as well as those of others.
